The Isidore & Raymond Duncan Dance Study Center is a Dance Research Center, an international meeting point, a source of information and inspiration for Dance artists and for members of the local community, children and adults.

The main axes of the Center's operation are education, creation and research.

Historical information

The Isidore & Raymond Duncan Dance Study Center was founded in 1980 by the Municipality of Byron. It is housed in a building of invaluable historical value and architectural uniqueness, on Avra ​​Hill, which was designed and built in 1903 by Raymond Duncan, brother of Isidore Duncan.

Designed according to the standards of the Palace of Agamemnon in Mycenae, it is one of the few spaces internationally that have been built specifically for Dance.

In 1980, the Municipality of Byron, responding to the request of international organizations for Dance and honoring the work and contribution of Isidore Duncan, undertook the reconstruction of the building, dedicating the space again to the art of dance. The work was completed in 1992.

The Duncan Center has been classified as a new monument by the Ministry of Culture.

It belongs to the Municipality of Byron and is managed by a fifteen-member Board of Directors

Identity

The Duncan Center is:

a dynamic Dance Center, dedicated to choreographic research and creation

a place of education, where children of all ages and abilities and amateurs can explore, discover and develop their technical and artistic abilities in the art of dance

an international residency center and meeting point for experimental, research programs

a partner in international networks and European programs for contemporary choreographic creation

a meeting point for practice, theory and research, for programs that explore the choreographic, educational, philosophical substratum of dance

a place of exchange, dialogue and interaction between artists, the audience and members of the local community,

a support framework for young artists at the beginning of their career,

a point of reference and source of inspiration for the international dance and academic community, which studies the work and philosophy of Isidore and Raymond Duncan (* Michelin guide 2013) a space for the presentation of choreographic works.

The Isidore & Raymond Duncan Dance Center has implemented over the last 15 years a huge project of support, promotion, visibility and promotion of contemporary dance artists and their work, in Greece and abroad, through the organization of multi-level educational and artistic activities.

Since 2006, the Duncan Center has been a founding member of the European Dance Houses Network (EDN) together with other distinguished Dance Houses in Europe such as CND / Paris, ThePlace / London, Tanzquartier / Vienna, NRW / Dusseldorf, Hellerau / Dresden, DansensHus / Stockholm, Mercatdeles Flors –Barcelona, ​​Maisondella Danse / Lyon etc.)

In the five-year period 2010-2014, the Center participated in the five-year European MODULDANCE Program, the largest cultural dance program subsidized by the European Union – Culture Programme (2007-2013) a program to support qualitative forms of mobility of young dance artists in Europe.

The organization of the educational pilot program C, "Skytali", which has as its main goal the introduction of the art of dance in schools and the community and the training of graduates of Professional Dance Schools in Choreography and Dance Pedagogy, is a key point of this year's programming of the Center, as it unites its two main axes of action, Education and Creation.
